What the title does and does not mean

Registration means a defined route of education, examination and professional indemnity requirements. It does not mean only registered architects may prepare drawings or submit planning applications — anyone competent may do that, and a great deal of good residential work in Cornwall is delivered by designers who are not registered.

When we would tell you to use a registered architect

There are situations where we would say so directly at the first visit rather than take the work.

Where a funder, insurer or client body specifically requires a registered architect
Complex or highly graded listed building work needing specialist conservation expertise
Large or unusual non-domestic projects outside a residential studio's normal range

What matters more than the title

Local approval record with the relevant authority, whether drawings are produced to a standard a builder can price, professional indemnity cover, and whether the person doing the design is the person who visits your site. Ask about those four things and the title question mostly answers itself.
